When a beloved dog crosses that Rainbow Bridge
All joy in the house lies frozen in memories and tears.
We lost Minnie after thirteen and a half years of her company.
And now that she has ascended to a place we cannot see
Our eyes and hearts hold her memory close.
She was quite a feisty little thing,
Twenty pounds of royalty proclaimed with every loud bark.
I think she was secretly proud of that big dog sound
Because she used it whenever she damn well pleased.
If another dog dared to cross the common ground behind her place
She announced her displeasure at the trespass.
She used it to try and take on the UPS truck
Or a random big dog who could have had her for lunch.
She had an eye out for strangers too and
I believe her mission was to protect us at all times.
She had the jaws of an alligator.
She used that strength to destroy even the “indestructible” toys.
And there was no retrieving anything banned from that mouth –
Once there even the “jaws of life” would not have removed it.
One of her greatest pleasures was food.
Food of any kind usually met with her approval,
The more the better.
She really wasn’t too fussy about what she ate
As long as she was given a chance to try it.
She even liked broccoli.
She so enjoyed being on any piece of furniture
Where she could hang her head over the edge and sleep upside down.
She was very good at sleeping but
The sound of a food wrapper crackling penetrated even the deepest slumber and here she came
Like she had been shot out of a cannon.
But she got sick and turned into a little shadow of herself .
Yesterday morning she couldn’t move and her eyes told us what we needed to do.
For such a lively girl, she left us quietly and I ask,
Who, now, will get me up at 5 a.m. to go and greet the world?
1 thought on “When Minnie left us”
While the pets we have in our lives are not humans in fur coats, they are our Spiritual Partners who have CHOSEN US…to be there for us, for us to be there for them, to allow us the opportunity to express love even when love has been denied us, to protect us while providing us with companionship, and to give us the opportunity to assist them…often from “the cradle to the grave,” which is a sacred responsibility (a spiritual compact we have with each of them as they have with each of us).
As a psychic medium (psychic’s see the future & mediums can communicate with the dead), when our pets transition over the Rainbow Bridge, they are only gone from this earthly plane. They are still with us from their spiritual plane, continuing to be a companion to us…warning us at times when we are in danger…and helping us to select our next pet who has also chosen us from the spirit level.
What many pets have told me about their lives on the earthly side is that they chose to come down at this time, they chose you as an owner, they came to be your companion (whether you realized at the time or not that you needed them), and that at the end of their lives, if and when you make the decision to “let them go” (take them to the vet) that you need to know that whatever day you gave them that last ride…there is no wrong timing, no wrong decision, no bad time for them to “return home.” They are adamant that “their human” not have regret about helping them to exit for this decision is what allowed them to return “Home.” And yes, some of them do choose to “reincarnate” as your next pet! Just as they loved you, they know that you loved them…whether you were effusive with your love, slow to express the love you had within, or used them to learn to love…often with slow baby steps…yourself and all the spiritual partners that come into your life! Blessings!!
